Spring 2026 LectureThis course advances knowledge and skill in quantitative research methods for health program evaluation, population health, healthcare quality improvement, and other healthcare research applications. Topics include design of experimental, quasi-experimental, and observational studies; primary data collection through surveys and other techniques; use of clinical, administrative, and other secondary data sources; and data analysis strategies appropriate to each design and type of data. The course addresses basic issues of sampling, measurement, and validity and reliability, as well as practical issues that arise in healthcare research.
Learning Outcomes1Identify major healthcare research issues, applications, and methodologies with special attention to evaluation of health care interventions at the individual, organizational and systems level.
2Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of research design.
3Describe alternative data collection approaches, including sampling, protocol development, measurement, assessment of validity and reliability, and generalization of findings.
4Identify sources of clinical and administrative data.
5Tailor data analysis strategies to study aims and data sources.
6Develop a research proposal that demonstrates knowledge of health care research methods.
