Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThe purpose of this elective course is to enhance the primary literature evaluation skills of the student prior to clerkship rotations. The course is designed to meet the needs of students with an interest in pursuing post-graduate training programs to enhance their ability to discuss the medical literature. Instruction is provided through a combination of lectures and class discussions of recently published literature articles with a cardiovascular focus.
Learning Outcomes1At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
2Discuss the basic fundamentals of clinical research.
3Understand and interpret statistical data in the published literature.
4Evaluate published literature as it pertains to study design, validity of results and application to treatment of specific patients and practice.
5Explain research outcomes from a clinical, economic and humanistic standpoint.
6Discuss the strengths/weaknesses of published current primary literature.
7Present a journal club and debate current primary literature.
