Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionAn introduction to basic probability with some theoretical background as well as applications to the physical sciences and engineering. Formulation of probability problems, general probability rules, conditional probability and Bayes Theorem, and discrete and continuous random variables and their properties. Prerequisite: two semesters of college calculus.
Learning Outcomes1Determine appropriate methods for determining probabilities and conditional probabilities.
2Use of distribution functions involving mass functions and cumulative distribution functions.
3Use of specific distribution functions for both discrete and continuous random variables including means and variances.
4Use of distribution functions involving more than one variable.
