Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course examines the role of public relations and mass media in sports communication. It provides an understanding of the operation of sports media and communication and how sports information departments perform their functions. Emphasis is on written communication from athletics communication perspective.
Learning Outcomes1Develop a clear understanding of the day to day responsibilities of sports public relations professionals.
2Develop attention-grabbing writing skills that reflect an understanding of news judgment.
3Learn about press box and game-management operations at a sports event, including news conference set-up and execution, coordination of interview requests, quote-gathering, and information and statistics updates and distribution.
4Create promotional, multimedia content at a sports event, including written features, press releases, social media, video and infographics.
5Explore communication strategies used by sports media relations professionals in breaking-news situations.
6Study the evolution of the relationship between media and sports organizations.
7Learn about the scope of responsibilities of sports media relations professionals, including the coordination of managed news events and special events, the production of media guides, the execution of publicity campaigns, and crisis communications.
8Understand the effects of evolving technology and social media on sports media relations.
