"Invented languages" include linguistic systems created for fictional worlds, such as Dothraki (Game of Thrones), Na'vi (Avatar), Elvish (Lord of the Rings) and Klingon (Star Trek), as well as languages invented for international communication by real speakers, such as Esperanto. In this course, you will study these systems, learn the major properties of natural human languages, and construct your own rudimentary languages.

Learning Outcomes

1Understand the characteristics and goals of various invented languages from linguistic, cultural, and historical perspectives.

2Show mastery of basic concepts of language structure and language typology.

3Elucidate mastery of basic concepts of sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and linguistic anthropology.

4Explain how natural languages has influenced the development of invented languages.

5Construct a rudimentary language system and create a back story, dictionary, grammar, and sample text.
