Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThe overall goal of the course is to provide students with an advanced understanding of microbial ecology in the animal microbiome and how to analyze next-generation sequencing data of amplicon libraries. In order to complete this goal, students will participate in activities including classroom lecture, group discussion, critical reading of literature, written assignments and exams, and student projects. Permission of instructor required.
Learning Outcomes1Understand and critically review peer-reviewed publications in microbiome studies.
2Design a microbiome experiment, with considerations for microbiome controls and reproducibility.
3Analyze next-gen sequencing data from gene amplicon libraries.
4Use R to manage datasets, perform analyses, and produce descriptive graphics.
5Develop basic computational literacy in bash and R scripting, and cluster computing.
