Fall 2025 Instructors:

Selected Russian poetry, prose, and drama of the 20th century in historical and cultural context. Students will read and discuss major authors and texts and will write critical essays on literary topics. Conducted largely in Russian.

Learning Outcomes

1Understand the role and position of literature in the Soviet Union.

2Situate the works they read in their historical and political context.

3Understand the relationship between writers, the Soviet state, and the means of disseminating texts.

4Improve understanding of the way literary works function through various artistic devices.

5Improve ability to perform close readings of literary texts.

6Increase ability to write analytical papers supporting a thesis.

7Increase ability to conduct and present independent research.

8Confront the philosophical and ethical questions raised by these works.
