(ANSC 62600) Integration of biochemical and physiological functions of nutrients in humans and animals emphasizing post-absorptive use of nutrients as sources of energy and for the synthesis of macromolecules, emphasizing integrative metabolism in liver, muscle and adipose tissues. Offered weeks 1 - 8. Prerequisite: NUTR 60500.

Learning Outcomes

1Demonstrate knowledge of the biological basis of energy expenditure and the methodologies available for measuring energy balance.

2Comprehend the metabolic pathways available for nutrient use

3Develop knowledge of the role of the major organs in maintaining macronutrient homeostasis.

4Comprehend and apply knowledge on the role of hormones and macronutrients in regulating nutrient use.

5Comprehend, interpret and apply knowledge on integration and regulation of macronutrient partitioning during normal and abnormal physiological states.

6Develop knowledge of and learn to apply research methods used in nutrition, including biochemical and molecular analyses, preclinical and clinical study designs, and epidemiological approaches.

7Develop skills important to a career in nutrition and animal science, e.g. critical thinking skills, reading and discussing current scientific literature, and scientific writing.
