Spring 2026 Lecture Lower DivisionJEDIThis foundation course examines issues pertaining to the environment's effects on human behavior and how humans' physiological, informational, and social needs impact the design of interior spaces. Specific topics explored include: personal and social use of space, proxemics, ergonomics, anthropometrics, cultural factors and universal design.
Learning Outcomes1Describe and discuss the bio-social, psychological, and cultural characteristics of human beings and how this influences specific design attributes of the built environment.
2Recognize, recall, and interpret basic concepts within the domain of Environment and Behavior Studies (EBS) to explain the effects environmental aspects have on which groups of people, under what sets of conditions, and why.
3Demonstrate learning, through written and oral communication, how people both shape and are shaped by the characteristics of space, form, light, color, objects, materials, and other details which make up the designed environment.
4Employ a process for integrating mechanisms of these two-way interactions between people and environments into the framework of design.
5Illustrate understanding and appreciation of philosophical contexts and dynamic interrelationships of culturally diverse people and their connection with the environment.
