Spring 2026 Laboratory Lecture Upper DivisionThis course presents a developmental, child-centered approach to the guidance and discipline of young children, including children with disabilities. Influential theories, relevant research, and effective guidance methods for the early childhood teachers and other professionals working with young children and families, including families from different cultural and economic backgrounds, are discussed.
Learning Outcomes1Identify the guiding theoretical perspectives and primary components of child guidance at various developmental stages.
2Synthesize the influence of family characteristics and diversity in ability, culture, race, and language in applying child guidance strategies with child guidance approaches.
3Recognize and reflect on the significance of using guidance approaches when working with all children, and when collaborating with a diverse population of caregivers, colleagues, and community members in a variety of early childhood settings.
4Implement developmentally appropriate methods of child guidance, discipline, and prevention of challenging behaviors.
5Demonstrate professionalism by practicing collaboration, engaging in effective communication, and modeling guidance strategies in the University and early childhood classroom.
