Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThe goal of this course is to increase knowledge of the challenges faced by underserved patient populations and ways healthcare providers can assist patients in overcoming these challenges. The course also provides exposure and experience in patient care provided in two rural federally qualified health centers (FQHCs). Students will be able to challenge preconceived notions that they may have about underserved populations and learn the impact that pharmacists can have in caring for these populations.
Learning Outcomes1Discuss and reflect on one's individual views and cultural attitudes and beliefs regarding vulnerable and underserved populations.
2Recognize characteristics of patients who are at increased risk for health and health care disparities.
3Identify obstacles to medication adherence in vulnerable and underserved patients.
4Summarize the roles of different individuals in the delivery of health care for vulnerable and underserved patients.
5Analyze ethical and legal issues affecting vulnerable and underserved populations.
6Examine financial barriers a patient may face in accessing social and health care services.
7Identify barriers and challenges faced by vulnerable and underserved patients and consider these when developing and modifying patient care plans.
8Demonstrate the role of pharmacists in caring for underserved and vulnerable populations.
