Spring 2025 Lecture
An advanced elective course focused on selected diseases of dogs and cats. Designed for the student who is considering entering either small animal exclusive practice, mixed animal practice, or companion animal practice. A systems approach is used to teach the major concepts of diseases affecting each body system while developing a deeper understanding of common diseases in the dog and cat. This course will concentrate on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases commonly encountered in small animal clinical practice. Topics in this elective include nephrology, urology, oncology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, cardiology, gastroenterology (includes liver and pancreas).
Learning Outcomes1List clinical signs for selected medical diseases in the dog and cat.
2Explain diagnoses for dogs and cats in each organ system.
3Describe treatment of selected medical diseases in the dog and cat.
4Apply a problem-based approach to selected medical diseases in the dog and cat.
5Describe diagnostic approach for selected medical diseases in the dog and cat.
6Integrate knowledge obtained in core small animal medicine courses with selected diseases to develop an expanded differential diagnoses list for common clinical presentations.
7Analyze initial medical information and diagnostics and differentiate between common medical diseases in the dog and cat.
