Spring 2026 Lecture"Production medicine" is an important part of modern bovine veterinary practice. This course will demonstrate this role of production medicine in bovine practice and the potential value to the producer and veterinarian. Topics discussed during the class will include cattle nutrition (including exposure to ration balancing programs), calf nutrition and management, records analysis including the use of computer programs, mastitis and milk quality measurements, economics, and animal welfare evaluations exposure to different facets of the beef industry (cow/calf, stocker, feedlot) and the differences in management in those systems, genomics, and immunology/vaccinology. Additionally, students will be exposed to team troubleshooting and performing farm evaluations. Outside speakers may be used as content experts.
Learning Outcomes1Gain a better understanding of how to successfully evaluate the "roadblocks" for improving the production and animal health of individual dairy & beef farms.
2Gain an understanding of the concept of herd-based medical and management decisions vs. individual animal medicine.
3Expose students to fundamentals of monitoring health and productivity based on herd parameters.
4Expose students to concepts and computer programs for dairy and beef nutrition and records analysis.
5Better prepare students to enter progressive dairy and beef practices.
