Spring 2025 Laboratory Lecture Lower DivisionThis course is an introduction to surgical nursing and anesthesia. The principles of asepsis and sterile technique will be introduced and demonstrated by staff and in some cases, practiced by the student. The basics of anesthesia will be introduced and practiced by the student.
Learning Outcomes1Identify basic surgical instruments.
2State the principles of aseptic technique.
3Identify breaks in aseptic technique.
4Perform open gloving.
5Perform aseptic personnel scrub; gowning and closed gloving.
6Identify the parts of an anesthesia machine.
7Know the function of the above parts.
8Trace the flow of oxygen through an anesthetic machine, with rebreathing and nonbreathing systems.
9Identify rebreathing and nonbreathing systems.
10Practice monitoring principles and identify normal parameters.
11Identify a variety of analgesic and anesthetic drugs.
12Begin to identify and state the uses and classifications of these drugs.
13Perform general anesthesia; from physical exam through recovery.
