Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionJEDIAn exploration into the nature of human communication, particularly the structures, functions, and substance of human language. Focus is on the interpenetration of language, culture and cognition, on the evolution of language and speech, and on their uses in everyday life.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the separate biological origins and functions for human language and speech/sign (languaging).
2Distinguish communication, language, and languaging, as these relate to individual cognition and to collective culture and society.
3Differentiate language and languaging, and written forms for each.
4Discuss how language and languaging reciprocally shape both cognition and culture.
