Spring 2025 Instructors:

A lecture course that relates biochemistry to organic chemistry. Chemical principles relevant to the assembly and function of macromolecules, the logic of biological free energy conversion, and enzyme catalysis are emphasized, all of which provide a foundation for the study of metabolism.

Learning Outcomes

1Describe the chemical structures of the building blocks of biological macromolecules, including amino acids, nucleotides, sugars and fatty acids.

2Demonstrate knowledge of the higher order structures of proteins, nucleic acids and polysaccharides.

3Understand the principles of enzyme catalysis and regulation.

4Demonstrate knowledge of lipid membrane structure and function.

5Understand how energy is harvested and utilized by biological systems.

6Demonstrate knowledge of analytical and preparative methods that can be applied to biochemistry.

7Understand the contributions of the discipline to society, including improvements to medicine, agriculture, the economy and the environment.
