Spring 2026 LectureA survey of fundamental topics on diseases that are caused by viral, bacterial, rickettsial, and parasitic agents and are known to be transmissible from animals to humans, as well as those diseases that are common to humans and animals. Topics emphasize the epidemiology and methods for prevention and control of these diseases in animal and human populations. Food safety and foodborne diseases, with particular emphasis on foods of animal origin, are discussed. Risk assessment of occupational and environmental health conditions to which veterinarians are likely to be exposed in training or the workplace also is covered.
Learning Outcomes1Identify and mitigate risks to human and animal health encountered by the veterinary profession and by others through direct and indirect animal contacts (e.g., food, meat, milk).
2Communicate about risks pertaining to environmental hazards and zoonotic diseases to professional and lay audiences.
3Evaluate data and scientific reports related to one health critically.
4Identify emerging and exotic diseases of animals and understand appropriate responses to them.
