This course will provide an introduction to small and large animal toxicology. It will cover the most common toxicoses encountered in veterinary medicine with emphasis on recognizing clinical signs of toxicoses, discerning differential diagnoses for these cases, and assigning appropriate diagnostic tests. Prerequisites: Completion of first year in the DVM program.

Learning Outcomes

1Recognize the most common toxicoses encountered in veterinary toxicology.

2Identify sources of exposure for the most common toxicoses encountered in veterinary toxicology.

3Explain the mechanisms of toxicity for the most common toxicoses encountered in veterinary medicine.

4Identify the best samples to submit for diagnostic toxicology tests.

5Formulate differential diagnoses for toxicoses based on clinical signs, blood chemistries, and diagnostic tests through critical thinking.

6Explain the typical treatments (symptomatic and supportive) and antidotes that can be given to animals exposed to toxins/toxicants.
