Spring 2026 Lecture JEDIUpper DivisionThis course traces the intellectual and cultural development of Russia, starting with the founding of the Kievan state and continuing to the last days of the Russian Empire. No knowledge of Russian is required.
Learning Outcomes1Understand the forces and circumstances (geographical, historical, political) that shaped the Russian state and gave rise to its distinctive forms of culture.
2Understand the distinction between rossiskoe (Russian as pertains to the polity) and russkoe (ethnically and linguistically Russian), and improve understanding of Russia as a multi-ethnic state.
3Discover the contributions of non-ethnic Russians to Russian culture.
4Develop an appreciation for the artistic value of examples of Russian literature, music, and the pictorial arts.
5Increase ability to read critically and write persuasively.
