Fall 2025 Lecture Distance Learning Upper DivisionThis course examines Korean society and culture through cinematic representations. Through film, the course provides a broad understanding of the major social and political changes in Korean society, as well as a brief history of Korean cinema and the transformations in the structure of the Korean film industry. Students will learn to identify major directors such as Park Chan-wook, Lee Chang-dong, and Bong Joon-ho, films, and genres. All films will be screened with English subtitles.
Learning Outcomes1Appreciate how film can be understood and used as a cultural and social form that can explain Korean society and culture.
2Build an understanding of various cinematographic techniques.
3Learn how to interpret a broad-based understanding of contemporary Korean culture and social issues.
4Identify elements of genre in Korean cinema through facts and evidence related to Korean history, culture, and daily life through reading Korean media texts and watching films.
5Develop and communicate their ideas orally and in writing.
