Summer 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionAn introduction to the characteristics, definitions, etiologies, and assessment of literacy development in school-aged children (4-18 years of age). Emphasis is placed on the scope of practice for speech-language pathologists in the assessment and intervention process for children diagnosed with language-based literacy disorders.
Learning Outcomes1Differentiate between normal and disordered literacy development.
2Identify formal and informal assessment tools in each of the following areas: phonological processing, decoding, encoding, oral reading fluency, reading comprehension.
3Summarize literacy strengths and weaknesses in clients with various profiles.
4Identify appropriate strategies / techniques to remediate client weaknesses.
5Identify various organizations, websites, programs, and supporting research for parents and educators.
