This course develops concepts of the guiding principles of quality, system and leadership initiatives in the Nurse Practitioner Role. The students explore principles and techniques of health coaching, interprofessional team work, delegation and prioritization that can be used in various healthcare settings. Potential quality initiatives will be identified and an improvement plan will be developed using various quality initiatives modalities in the healthcare system to improve quality care, safety and patient outcomes. Permission of department required.

Learning Outcomes

1Examine the role of Advanced Practice Nurses in healthcare quality initiatives.

2Explore principles of leadership and quality improvement including patient safety. Human factors, patient coaching and healthcare costs in practice management settings.

3Utilize principles of interprofessional teamwork, delegation and prioritization in the development of a quality improvement plan.

4Assess the impact of QI initiatives on quality care, patient safety and healthcare outcomes.

5Examine principles of practice management including strategic planning, quality improvement, risk management, systems analysis, budget development, fiscal accountability, and resource management.

6Compare cultural aspects of advanced practice nursing care.
