Spring 2026 Laboratory LectureThis course will discuss conditions that are commonly treated in small animal primary care practice. Topics will include wellness and preventative care for dogs and cats at all lifestages, dental care, diagnosis and management of common oral and skin diseases, and emergency medicine. Humane euthanasia and palliative care will also be discussed.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the role the primary care veterinarian has developing and implementing lifestage wellness programs.
2Describe the key goals of a wellness program for each lifestage.
3Describe vaccine and infectious disease screening programs for both cat and dog including available preventative medications.
4Demonstrate standard procedure for oral evaluation, oral care to include dental cleaning and extractions.
5Recognize common dermatologic diseases in the dog and cat and describe treatment to resolve these medical problems.
6Demonstrate common dermatologic diagnostics procedures.
7Explain key concepts of companion animal patients presenting as a primary care emergency patient: shock, coagulation abnormalities, oxygenation abnormalities, and sepsis.
8Solve common fluid therapy problems addressed in both primary care hospitals and in primary care emergency practices.
9Explain key concepts of palliative care, humane euthanasia, and natural death.
