Spring 2026 Lecture Departmental Credit
An overview of the fundamental concepts of immunology, with an emphasis on the immune system of domestic animals and comparative immunology. Focuses on the interactions between the host and microbial pathogens and on mechanisms that underlie hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmune diseases, and immune deficiencies. Discusses the principles of vaccination and serologic tests.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the basic principles by which the immune system functions.
2Describe the mechanisms by which the immune system protects the host against infectious diseases and can be mobilized to treat cancer.
3Explain the role of aberrant immune responses in hypersensitivity reactions, allergies and in autoimmune diseases.
4Outline the immunological principles of vaccines and vaccination.
5Identify the principles of immunoassays.
6Explain the mechanisms of action of drugs that inhibit immune responses and drugs that target specific immune mechanisms.
