Summer 2025 Distance Learning Lecture Upper DivisionThis course will explore the development of verbal and social behavior as explained through tenets of applied behavior analysis. Students will identify the similarities and differences between verbal operants as well as appropriate function-based interventions to develop each including augmentative communication systems and functional communication training. Measurement and intervention for more complex social-communication skills will also be addressed. Permission of instructor required.
Learning Outcomes1Understand and describe the historical perspective of Verbal Behavior in relation to Applied Behavior Analysis including differences between structural and functional approaches.
2Describe verbal behavior in terms of the three term contingencies.
3Define, describe, and differentiate the basic verbal operants.
4Assess, interpret results and develop appropriate treatment plan to address target skills utilizing the VB-MAPP.
5Identify and describe evidence-based practices for addressing communication for individuals with complex communication needs
6Identify and describe evidence-based practices for increasing social-communication skills including intraverbal and listener behaviors.
7Summarize and critically evaluate research on verbal and communication interventions for individuals with disabilities.
