Spring 2025 Instructors:

An introduction to the study of German literature based on an overview of the formal elements of poetry, fiction, and drama as well as basic concepts of literary theory. Texts in German; conducted primarily in German.

Learning Outcomes

1Identify common characteristics of primary literary genres (e.g. prose, poetry, drama) as exhibited during one or more time periods in German-language cultures.

2Discuss (in German) selected literary works that are written in German in respect to their main themes and to devices that help writers convey the texts' meaning, such as symbolism, metaphor, irony, and allusion.

3Compose (in German, with the aid of a dictionary) analytical essays that examine the relationship between the content, style, and sociohistorical context of selected literary texts.
