Fall 2025 Lecture Distance Learning Upper DivisionThis is the second of two methods courses designed for students who are planning to be secondary mathematics teachers. The course content is organized around principles of equity, mathematical task design, classroom discourse, classroom environment assessment and technology. It also focuses on the cycle of effective teaching, which includes justifying planning decisions, analyzing teaching, and using data to inform instruction. The courses addresses NCTM's Professional Standards as well as the content and process standards included in Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics and pedagogical strategies for teaching in ways that serve the diverse population of mathematics learners.
Learning Outcomes1Develop an understanding of students' thinking and the processes by which they come to learn mathematics and think mathematically.
2Develop an understanding of teaching and learning environments through analyzing classroom interactions and the interplay among mathematics, classroom tasks, teacher moves, and students' ways of thinking and being.
3Develop an understanding of the scope and significance of school mathematics through an examination of state and national standards and mathematics education research.
4Develop professional attitudes and work habits and identify professional organizations and resources locally and nationally.
5Continue learning mathematics, especially in ways that promote inquiry and investigation.
