Fall 2026 Lecture Distance Learning Upper Division
This is the second of two methods courses designed for students who are planning to be secondary mathematics teachers. The course content is organized around the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Mathematical Teaching Practices. It builds on effective mathematics teaching strategies from the first methods course with more independent lesson planning, implementation, and reflection. The methods courses address NCTM's principles and standards, as well as the content and process standards included in Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics, and pedagogical strategies for teaching these in ways that serve all mathematics learners.
Learning Outcomes1Develop an understanding of students' thinking and the processes by which they come to learn mathematics and think mathematically.
2Develop an understanding of teaching and learning environments through analyzing classroom interactions and the interplay among mathematics, classroom tasks, teacher moves, and students' ways of thinking and being.
3Develop an understanding of the scope and significance of school mathematics through an examination of state and national standards and mathematics education research.
4Develop professional attitudes and work habits and identify professional organizations and resources locally and nationally.
5Continue learning mathematics, especially in ways that promote inquiry and investigation.
