This course is intended to complement many of the concepts discussed in BIOL 58601 Ecology Lecture. By studying selected topics in depth, both experimentally and through primary literature, you should gain a greater understanding of ecological principles and the process of science as it is applied to a variety of ecological topics. Permission of department required.

Learning Outcomes

1Read and discuss papers from the primary literature.

2Develop hypotheses and conduct hypotheses testing through discussion of literature and predictions for experiments conducted in class.

3Write and present on a scientific paper based on experiments conducted in class and lab-related topics.

4Discuss parametric and non-parametric statistical tests and discuss the proper application of statistical tools.

5Use multiple field techniques for sampling terrestrial plants, aquatic insects, and avian behavior.
