Fall 2026 Laboratory HonorsLower DivisionStudents will learn how to use bioinformatics to study a gene sequence of their choice from the local SEA-PHAGES program. Students will then use molecular biology and biophysical techniques to characterize their gene product. The goal of each project will be to gain insight into the 3-dimensional fold of each of these mysterious novel phage genes. Students will work in teams but will have their own individual project such that each student will learn the necessary skills to perform scientific experiments starting from the bioinformatics to cloning to purification to structural characterization to communicating their findings to others.
Learning Outcomes1Acquire the fundamental skills and concepts necessary to be successful as a biology major and as a research scientist.
2Learn how to perform basic laboratory techniques.
3Learn to work effectively as a team.
4Design and execute experiments.
5Evaluate and interpret data critically, read and discuss research articles, and to disseminate their research in written and oral formats.
