Thermodynamics and physics of radiation and its interaction with interfaces and matter; radiation characteristics of surfaces and radiation properties of solids, liquids, and gases; analysis of radiation exchange between real and idealized surfaces; fundamentals of radiation transfer in absorbing, emitting, and scattering media; interaction of radiation with conduction and convection; remote temperature sensing and applications to selected problems involving combined energy transfer mechanisms. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: ME 31500.
