Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis is a clinical seminar course designed to support students' ability to meet knowledge and skills standards related to the scope of practice of speech-language pathologists. This course provides supplemental learning opportunities and support for students as they complete their hands-on clinical practice each semester by taking a more in-depth look at conditions within the nine areas of practice as well as cultural and linguistically diverse families, ethical standards in clinical practice, professional issues and trends within communication sciences and disorders, and interprofessional education and practice. The course is offered each semester and objectives vary to advance the knowledge and skills required to meet the program and ASHA/CAA guidelines for completion of the program as well as certification standards as indicated by the CFCC.
Learning Outcomes1Assess the interaction of cultural and linguistic variables between caregivers and the individual served.
2Reflect on the impact of both implicit and explicit bias in clinical service delivery and actively explore individual biases and how they relate to clinical services.
3Deconstruct the social determinants of health and environmental factors for individuals served and how these determinants relate to clinical services.
4Distinguish the roles and importance of interdisciplinary/interprofessional assessment and intervention and connecting one's own role and those of other professions to appropriately assess and address the needs of the individuals and populations served.
5Justify the importance of individual and collective (e.g., local, national organizations) advocacy for clients/patients/students' right to care.
6Explore contemporary professional issues that affect Speech-Language Pathology, entry-level and advanced certifications, licensure, and other relevant professional credentials, as well as local, state, and national regulations and policies relevant to professional practice.
7Interpret Professional code of ethics and professional fiduciary responsibility.
8Develop leadership and mentoring skills related to the supervisory process.
9Prioritize continuous learning in speech, language, and hearing sciences.
