Fall 2025 Instructors:

This course explores the characteristics, courses, and potential causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with a particular emphasis on language and social communication. And, how our understanding of these issues informs the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of ASD. Students discuss and evaluate issues associated with ASD, including early diagnosis, behavioral challenges, evidence-based treatment techniques, and current issues in the field.

Learning Outcomes

1Learn the theoretical foundations and milestones of social communication in order to contextualize typical/atypical development.

2Understand the interactions between social, cognitive, and linguistic competencies in order to analyze the impact of social communication deficits across the lifespan.

3Describe and evaluate treatment approaches for language and social communication impairments in order to prepare students for clinical practice.
