Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course addresses foundational knowledge in language and linguistics for pre-service teachers and educational researchers. The purpose of this course is to survey linguistics, the study of the science of language. In this course, we will focus on phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. These topics will be discussed in terms of theory, as well as in the context of ESL classroom instruction, materials development, and assessment.
Learning Outcomes1Understand and describe core concepts and terminology of descriptive linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
2Apply course concepts to analyze linguistic data and gain a fuller understanding of the systematic nature of language.
3Apply descriptive linguistic concepts to instruction to support the four domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
4Research and describe the biological, social, and cultural dimensions of linguistics, including pragmatics, discourse, dialects, bilingualism, and language in education.
5Discuss the role of home language and culture in ELL instruction.
6Apply an understanding of the role of culture and family background in the student's experience of the classroom.
