Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course provides students with an overview of the field of social studies, of selected issues in the field, and of best practices strategies for teaching social studies to children in the 3-6 classroom. Students will work to identify the most important social studies knowledge, skills and dispositions; investigate how 3-6 children learn social studies most effectively. Students will then use their new understandings to implement lessons, analyzing the effectiveness of their instruction for children in the 3-6 grades.
Learning Outcomes1Develop compelling questions in order to guide inquiry in the 3-6 social studies classroom.
2Apply social studies disciplinary concepts and tools in developing curriculum and implementing effective teaching strategies for the 3-6 children.
3Use evidence to guide instruction and to evaluate the effectiveness of their instructional practice.
4Identify critical issues in teaching social studies to the 3-6 learner and pose evidence-based solutions.
