Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course builds on the content of EDCI 28500 (Multicultural Education) with specific attention to issues of social justice related to literacy and linguistic diversity. Within this framework, students will learn strategies for teaching English language learners, deconstruct deficit perspectives of dialectical differences, and consider approaches to classroom management. Additionally, a field experience component with an ELL teacher will be included in the course.
Learning Outcomes1Engage with the following concepts via reading, analysis/critique, and consideration of how they might apply in future classrooms: culturally relevant pedagogy and culturally sustaining pedagogy, code switching and code meshing, restorative justice.
2Learn pedagogical strategies for working with ELLs in secondary English classrooms.
3Understand the school-to-prison pipeline phenomenon and develop classroom management principles accordingly.
4Participate in a field experience that requires interaction with culturally and linguistically diverse students in a local ELL classroom.
