Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course addresses English language instruction and content instruction for English Learning students in mainstream classrooms. The purpose of this course is to provide information necessary to the design of materials and instructional strategies for English Language Learners in K-12 context. In this course, we will focus on current issues and techniques in instruction for ELL students who are at different stages of English language acquisition in the K-12 school context. The course will also consider the nature of immigrants' experiences of a new country and school context. Practical field experiences integrated into the course will provide students with the opportunity to apply and demonstrate principles and strategies presented in the course.

3Examine the role of visual and verbal language in ELL instruction.
4Analyze the ways in which students use literacy as writing, drawing, and talk.
5Describe the language characteristics of important school genres.
6Apply the teaching and learning cycle in the genre approach to lesson planning.
7Implement and reflect on a multimodal, content area ELL lesson.
8Discuss the role of home language and culture in ELL instruction.
9Apply an understanding of the role of culture and family background in the student's experience of the classroom.
