Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionCredit hours: 2.00. This course is an intensive Science of Reading (SoR) course. It has been developed and aligned with the research base of the Science of Reading. The course will include an understanding of effective literacy instruction aligned with the Science of Reading, which includes instruction in reading, reading development, and best practices for reading instruction. The seven components of scientifically based reading instruction include (1) phonemic awareness, (2) phonics, (3) fluency, (4) vocabulary, (5) comprehension, (6) oral language, and (7) writing and spelling. The course emphasizes the role of language, reading, and writing connections, and includes theoretical and practical aspects of teaching reading and writing skills. Scientifically based instruction promotes strategies for differentiated instruction for students with reading difficulties, students with disabilities, and multilingual learners.
Learning Outcomes1Apply knowledge of research and theory that guides literacy learning to designing and teaching evidence-based and developmentally appropriate instruction that addresses the needs of all learners.
2Assess student learning by designing/using or adapting formative (formal and informal) and summative assessments for the group of students in the assigned classroom.
3Analyze and reflect upon learning and teaching performance by making connections to standards.
