Fall 2025 Distance Learning Lower DivisionThe goal of the course is to provide background information in language and literacy necessary for success in literacy methods courses. The course will address basic linguistics and phonetic patterns of English, as well as the structures of literature and literacy terms.
Learning Outcomes1Compare and contrast levels of language structure: phoneme, morpheme, root, affix, phrase, sentence.
2Differentiate graphic from phonological elements of language (e.g., grapheme vs phoneme).
3Compare and contrast vocabulary terms (e.g. synonym, homonym, homograph).
4Define and articulate written elements (e.g. digraphs, consonant clusters, long/short vowels).
5Identify morpho-syntactic structures and phonological patters in written and spoken language.
6Compare and contrast literary genres (e.g. narrative, non-narrative, fiction, nonfiction).
7Distinguish the organizational structures of fictional genres from those of nonfictional genres.
8Identify literary terms in context (e.g. alliteration, character traits, plot, stanza).
