Fall 2025 LectureIntroduction to basic principles of anesthesiology. Pharmacology of anesthesia and analgesic drugs, anesthetic equipment, monitoring, regional and local anesthetic techniques, pain management and anesthesia care of multiple species and special disease considerations will be covered.
Learning Outcomes1Learn the pharmacology and clinical effects of (and indications and contraindications for) common preanesthetic agents, including anticholinergic agents, tranquilizers and sedatives.
2Learn the basic principles of general anesthesia of small and large animals.
3Understand the pharmacology and clinical effects of (and indications and contraindications for) various injectable and inhalant anesthetics.
4Learn the principles of local and regional anesthesia and understand how they are applied in the clinical setting. To learn the pharmacology of local anesthetic drugs
5Learn how to evaluate a patient preoperatively and determine the appropriate choice of anesthetic, monitor the patient during general anesthesia and recovery, and recognize and treat emergencies.
6Learn anesthetic techniques suitable for a variety of species and how to apply them in various clinical settings.
7Learn how to anesthetize patients with a variety of medical conditions.
8Learn the principles of pain management and apply them to a variety of clinical situations.
