Fall 2024 LectureProvides information on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of behavior problems of dogs and cats, with emphasis on differential diagnosis of behavioral problems and behavioral pharmacology. Topics include aggression, anxiety related problems, inappropriate elimination, client counseling, and problem prevention. Client interaction and the question of euthanasia for behavioral problems is also discussed.
Learning Outcomes1Identify stress signs as well as the mood (positive or negative) in dogs and cats by reading their body language.
2Apply behavior knowledge into veterinary practice.
3Formulate a diagnostic work-up for the more common behavior problems in companion animals and arrive at a list of differential diagnoses.
4Choose the appropriate behavior modification techniques to prevent developing behavior problems.
5Compare and contrast the various FDA approved drugs and dosing regimen to treat the more common behavior problems in companion animals.
6Interact efficiently and compassionately with owners of patients with a behavior problem and discuss the question of behavior-related euthanasia.
7Discuss welfare topics relating to small animals intelligently.
