This course is a culmination of previously studied clinical skills, disease processes, and small animal nursing that is focused on transferring knowledge to practical use. The course will be taught utilizing emergency and critical care case studies to highlight disease processes, physiology, critical thinking skills, and the role of the veterinary nurse in providing high level patient care. The course goal is to prepare graduates to respond to emergent and critical patient scenarios in all types of small animal veterinary practices.

Learning Outcomes

1Identify veterinary emergency situations utilizing patient vital signs and knowledge of disease processes.

2Identify common emergency disease processes and anticipate patient treatments based on observations.

3Anticipate changes in patient status by utilizing critical thinking skills.

4Apply important communication skills to improve teamwork.

5Recognize indicators of mental health issues in self.
