This course is an introduction to the surgical environment and all aspects related to the principles of asepsis and the practice of sterile technique. Students will learn using a variety of teaching modalities (lecture, group work, laboratory experience).

Learning Outcomes

1Identify basic surgical instruments.

2Explain the principles of aseptic technique.

3Perform the duties of surgical nurse.

4Perform the duties of the circulating nurse.

5Explain procedures to prepare items for sterilization and the techniques used for sterilization.

6Demonstrate bandaging techniques for both large and small animal patients.

7Identify the phases of wound healing.
