Fall 2025 Lecture Lower DivisionThis course will introduce students to an overview of nutritional concepts as it applies to common domestic small and large animal species and selected exotic companion/avian pets. Basic concepts for understanding nutritional needs for all species will be introduced as well as therapeutic use of diets as it relates to animal nursing.
Learning Outcomes1Assess normal nutritional requirements of the animal (ruminant vs. monogastric) as they apply to physiological processes.
2Explain BCS evaluation as it relates to obesity, weight loss, and weight management programs.
3Identify adult, pediatric and geriatric nutritional needs.
4Describe the changing nutritional needs from pediatric stages to adulthood.
5Define specific differences in diets based upon breed (large vs. small, selected breed well dog needs).
6Compare, contrast and analyze food labels.
7Evaluate diets and dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, hay, feed and pasture management.
8Plan and perform nutritional counseling/weight management programs by educating clients on dietary needs of pets and livestock, incorporating the roles of the technician and veterinarian.
