Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionProvides a fluid dynamics background for graduate students interested in atmospheric sciences, oceanography, mantle convection, hydrology, turbulence, or pollution. Topics covered include: basic assumptions and deviations of Navier Stokes equations, conservation laws, vorticity, divergence, waves, and applications in atmosphere, ocean, and geophysics.
Learning Outcomes1Provide students a rigorous foundation in geofluid dynamics as well as the connections among math, physics, and real natural phenomena.
2Students will become accustomed to applying the physical equations to real phenomena, and to presenting them in a concise way.
3Understand the basic equations and physics in existing models which provides a broader and deeper understanding of the earth sciences.
