Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionJEDIThis course explores the history of the trans-Mississippi and Pacific west from the early 17th century to the late 19th century. The diverse experiences of the inhabitants and the environmental transformations are the central themes of the course.
Learning Outcomes1Understand the environmental and human history of the American west.
2Be aware of the complicated and overlapping experiences of the inhabitants of the west including, but not limited to, the diverse indigenous population and the myriad groups of settlers from Asia, South and Central America, Europe, and the US.
3Gain a new appreciation of how diverse populations interacted with multiple environments of the American west and the ongoing impact of that legacy on our modern times.
4Build upon and improve skills as critical thinkers and readers.
5Enhance skills in oral communication and analytical writing.
