The focus of this course is on identification, referral, and treatment options for patients with organic and non-organic mental health conditions commonly seen in athletic training. The course will also address cultural competence in patient care and the role of various mental healthcare providers that comprise the mental health referral network. Permission of department required. Prerequisite: HK 53500 with B- or better.

Learning Outcomes

1Explain the theoretical background of psychological and emotional response to injury and forced inactivity.

2Identify and select psychosocial techniques into a patients treatment or rehabilitation program.

3Evaluate which psychosocial techniques are appropriate for a patient in a given clinical scenario.

4Identify at-risk individuals with psychosocial disorders and/or mental health emergencies.

5Distinguish appropriate patients requiring referral to mental health care providers.

6Develop a management plan for at-risk individuals.

7Explain and demonstrate processes of effective interpersonal and cross-cultural communication.

8Construct psychological techniques and interventions that are used to facilitate and motivate the patient for return to play.

9Summarize the importance of Cultural Competence when providing healthcare.

10Evaluate how psychosocial considerations affect clinical decision-making related to return to activity or participation.
