This course immerses students in a company-like environment where they work on semester-long design projects that are sponsored by industry partners. Students learn about the various roles within a UX environment as they build collaboration and project management skills. Projects utilize a human-centered design approach with an emphasis on designing for the user experience. Students will engage in substantial research and evaluation activities, informed by seminal literature in the field, along with their design work. Students are expected to take responsibility for project deliverables and mentor junior students. Permission of department required.

Learning Outcomes

1Implement team-building skills and manage collaboration between teammates. Solve conflicts in a fair and effective manner that is a "lead by example" process. Organize and lead team retrospectives. Measure your UX role and your teammates, then determine growth plans (e.g., create team member growth plans; retrospective reflections; peer team evaluations).

2Develop a project strategy with tasks and deliverables based on project goals and team dynamics. Execute project management plan with milestones, and team member tasks. Champion the development of a UX project proposal that will clearly explain the project vision, direction, goals, stakeholders, deliverables, timeline, and tasks (e.g., identification, planning, and completion of project milestones).

3Demonstrate depth in one or more UX specializations and critique strengths and weaknesses. Teach UXD specialization tasks and process to team members. Educate team members about the roles and careers of UX designers. Document your educational path of UXD skill development in a written reflection (e.g., activity log of specialization goals and outcomes; guide to job searching).

4Communicate UX approaches to diverse stakeholders in a professional manner. Champion the final project written design documentation, including the executive summary. Enhance portfolio, conduct job search, and mentor junior students (e.g., sponsor-facing reports; executive summaries; lead presentation and documentation).

5Conduct advanced primary and secondary research in tandem with ongoing client communication and team design work. Write up research and evaluation findings in a formal paper.
