Fall 2026 Lecture Distance Learning Upper DivisionA study of the presidency and presidential leadership in the policy process. The course explores foundations of presidential authority and how that role has changed over time, and the role of the executive branch in making policy compared to other branches of government.
Learning Outcomes1Discuss the ways in which presidents differ in their leadership styles, their skills, their management of the executive branch, and their roles as decision makers.
2Explain how the institution of the presidency and the executive branch have evolved over time.
3Analyze the institutional constraints and political conditions that affect presidential power in shaping policy and political outcomes.
