Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course introduces the variety and characteristics of developmental assessments for young children, birth through 3rd grade. Students learn formal and informal strategies for assessing and documenting individual development and learning; linking assessment and instruction; and using assessment for determining eligibility for early intervention / early childhood special education. Students learn about partnering with families and other professionals, as well as addressing cultural and ethical issues in assessment. Assessment of early language, reading, writing, and early math development is integrated throughout the course. Field-based experiences are included.
Learning Outcomes1Explain appropriate uses of assessment with young children, birth through 3rd grade/age 8, for instruction and intervention including early literacy (oral language, emergent reading, and emergent writing) and early math development.
2Describe the appropriate use of standardized and non-standardized approaches to assessment with young children, including literacy-related assessments (e.g., language, reading, and writing), mathematics assessments, and family-centered assessment strategies.
3Describe and be able to apply the linked systems of assessment, intervention, and evaluation, including in the context of IEP/IFSP development, progress monitoring, literacy and mathematics instruction and intervention, and program evaluation.
4Conduct assessments, accurately interpret results, and critically evaluate assessment data across developmental and academic areas, including language, reading, writing, and math.
5Explain approaches to inclusion of family members in assessments, including identification of resources and priorities, and strategies for communicating assessment results to families.
6Describe ethical consideration in assessment as well as cultural, language, and developmental differences that affect assessment implementation and outcomes.
7Exhibit growth in professional behavior related to assessment of young children and for the field of early childhood education / early childhood special education.
8Demonstrate the dispositions and skills of a developing early childhood educator, as described in the course syllabus and in the practicum evaluation.
