Fall 2025 Lecture Laboratory Upper DivisionThis course will cover the proper methods of restraint, daily care, nursing techniques, and housing needs for the common species of laboratory animals.
Learning Outcomes1Understand nutritional requirements, physiological data, anesthesia, blood collection, drug administration, handling, sexing, and common diseases of laboratory rodents, primates, and lagomorphs as well as non-traditional pets including small mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.
2Familiarization with laboratory housing, environmental control, and environmental enrichment concepts.
3Familiarization with basic genetics and breeding programs of laboratory animals.
4Understand sanitation and hygiene procedures as they relate to laboratory animal management.
5Introduce concepts of experimental methodology and regulatory compliance within laboratory animal medicine.
6Introduce wildlife triage and wildlife nursing techniques.
